Don't Buzz the Doorbell

Ever wanted to pull your hair out because you just got the baby to sleep and the delivery man goes and rings the blasted doorbell. Well, I myself haven't had the experience. (We are newly married and childless for now) But, this has happened on several occasions for my Mother-in-law. This saint of a woman keeps my 9 month old and 2 and a half year old nephews 5 days a week and still manages to stay sane. So she asked me if I could design her a hanging sign to place near the doorbell to warn the delivery men that she would release angry bees after them if they even looked at the doorbell. I wanted to insure that no delivery man was injured, especially since my Pick-Your-Plum deliveries get dropped there! So, I got right to work and came up with this little beauty. If you wanna make sure that your little bee stays asleep, you might visit our Etsy shop and get one for yourself.

Teacher Appreciation Week May 7th-11th

Posted by Simply Spelled Tuesday, April 10, 2012 0 comments

Teacher Appreciation week will be here before we know it! Mark your calendars for May 7th-11th. I am so glad that this is a week long celebration. With all my husbands side of the fam in education, I have a front row seat to all the sad, stressful, and happy times that occur throughout the school year. I think that everyday should be teacher appreciation day. The amount of time, energy, and love that goes into educating our children is exhausting.

I have always said that I have sooooo much respect for teachers and nurses.  Two. Jobs. I. Could. Not. Do. The closest I came to teaching was when I was a senior in Dental Hygiene School. I was required to create a a fun lesson plan for a Kindergarten class. Lucky for me, I was able to go to my Sis-in-laws classroom. I had envisioned a successful, inspiring, and informative talk about plaque bugs, dreaded cavity bugs, brushing, and flossing. And for the most part it went as planned, except when my sis-in-law left the room (or as I say abandoned me) and I had to listen to a little girl talk about everything (in detail) she and her entire family did the previous evening. I just asked what kind of toothbrush she had!?!? Oh dear! From that point on I knew that I was glad to only have one child to focus on in my dental chair. Gotta love those patient teachers! They deserve lots of presents like Simply Spelled's Love Teach Inspire Barnwood block.

Our Kind of Pickin'

One of mine and Barret's favorite hobbies is to Antique Shop.  Over Spring Break Barret and I went on a mini vacation to Dallas, Texas. We planned on going to a Dallas Mavericks game and take advantage of doing a little Pickin' on our journey. I had a friend tell me about a sweet little town called McKinney, Tx near Dallas that was great for vintage shopping. McKinney was soooo cute. Talk about a fabulous town square! So many adorable shops and Eateries.

Upon seeing this little beauty, we knew we needed to check out this shop. The trip was short and sweet, but we thought we should share our treasures.....

We only had a couple hours in McKinney, but I think we made them count.

Love this sweet book. You can definitely sense that this was written a few decades ago--hence that smoking a pipe in every pic. Looks like daddy needs to get the patch.

Barret spotted both of these pretties.  We were looking for something unique to go in our living room, either above the mantle or as wall decor. The chippy front porch stiles were a perfect fit for our home. The vintage Victorian scale is simply gorgeous. Pictures really don't give this scale justice. It will be a perfect addition to our built-in china cabinet. Love love love!

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with this vintage fabric I found. The texture is A-mazing. I just don't think I could bare to cut it...I think I'll leave it whole for right now until I can find the perfect project for it. Now for the tricycle....I spotted it outside one of the antique shops and I knew that we had to figure out a way to cram it into the trunk of my Honda Civic. On a side note, so glad that I did my yearly cleaning of my trunk!! The bike is so precious. I'm pretty sure that we are doing to put this puppy on the front porch with some lovely potted plants.

Hope you guys like our newest additions to our little home. I'll post pics once we get placements figured out! Have a great day!

Prank War Next Door

Several years ago, my BFF Dee and I would buy random items from a popular wholesale store here in our hometown. We had so much fun looking through all kinds of junk and finding hidden treasures. These "treasures" would then be placed in our friend's yards. We called this activity "bombarding". I'm not really sure where we came up with this name, but it stuck.

We would waste so much money buying eagle heads made out of seashells and stuff it in mailboxes (pretty sure that was illegal to open their mailbox, but in our defense it WAS a delivery). We put dozens of hideous silk flowers in front yards. Flower beds were great for hiding one horned ceramic deer or dowel rods topped with rubber chickens. I'm talking random junk!

It was so much fun to hit their houses with this stuff then notice several months later that they had missed one of the "treasures". Oh how it brings a smile to my face.

So, Friday night my traitor BFF Dee (who is also my Sister-in-Law and Neighbor) came over for dinner and left us this little fella.  Yes, a mini-bombarding on OUR front porch...not smart sista!

After dinner, Barret and I began the payback plotting. We had acquired an old toilet (long story) a few months back. Talk about a perfect payback prank.

Notice anything out of the Ordinary?

Oops, looks like someone left the seat up....

My apologies if some of the pics aren't straight...I was hysterically laughing the whole time! Pranks are so much fun. Obviously more fun when you are the pranker than prankee. Wish I could have seen her face when she was driving up the driveway. We definitely shared a good laugh and then went to play tennis. Gotta love us crazy girls!

A Quick Trip

The Hubby and I are headed for a quick trip to Dallas to see our favorite NBA team(s). I am going to cheer on my Los Angeles Lakers, while Barret has chosen to be a traitor and root for the Dallas Mavericks. I am appalled that he has decided to do this, but I have created a small list for reasons not to disown him (1) he is the designated trip driver (2) he is the responsible one in this relationship i.e-- keeping up with car keys, game tickets, money {important things like that} (3) Lamar Odom now plays for the Mavs, so if i get the opportunity to see Khloe all will be forgiven.

My love for the Lakers began almost 2 years ago when we were on our 1 year anniversary vacation in Charleston, South Carolina. The Lakers were playing the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. One night we had an amazing meal at the delicious The Library Restaurant and then had cocktails atop the fabulous Rooftop Bar. We had so much fun watching the game and enjoying the delightful summer weather. Throughout the rest of the trip we tuned into the Lakers, even cheering them on to their championship win. And that's when the love affair began...
One player in particular, Pau Gasol, has me drawn to the Lakers. For the longest time, my husbands fellow basketball teammates have said that he looks and plays similar to this 7 foot giant. No, Barret isn't seven foot tall, but he does have abnormally long arms/legs and poses a slight resemblance to the NBA superstar. I certainly hope that he get the chance for a photo opportunity, but chances are it will be from a distance. Here's to dreaming though! You guys should check out this televised gamed between the Mavericks and the Lakers Wednesday March 21 9:30 (eastern time) on ESPN.

I'll be the crazy nut sporting a Lakers tee that I got in the little girls section at Old Navy!

50 Years of Love and Laughter

Posted by Simply Spelled Monday, March 19, 2012 0 comments

We had a request from one of our customers to create a unique frame for a sweet couple that was celebrating 50 years of marriage. In today's world that is definitely a milestone to celebrate. She mentioned that she wanted to have two 5x7 photo openings for a picture from the past and another for a snap shot from the present. The frame was going to be on display at a party being thrown for the golden couple. I knew instantly that I wanted the mat to be a smokey charcoal color with a black frame. The text "Celebrating 50 Years of Love and Laughter" actually came to me as I was thinking about my marriage. Barret and I have been married for nearly 3 years. It's hard to imagine being married for 50 years, but I kept thinking there must be so much love and a lots of laughter to get through all the struggles. I hope that our piece brought some joy to this amazing couple.

Uninterupted Naptime

We all know that nap time is essential. Isn't it always the luck that  right as that sweet little head hits the pillow, the delivery man bangs on the door, an unwanted solicitor wants to yack your ear off about how his vacuum cleaner will suck the cement dust from under your carpet, or your husbands noisy buddies come by to see if he can finally come out and play...

I certainly did not want all this stress to be an issue for my dear friend Allison, who recently had a darling little girl name Caroline. I knew that I wanted to create a door hanger that was bright and cheery that would attract a few eyeballs. This is what I came up with...

Sports Themed Blocks

Sports are a big part of mine and Barret's life. As of lately we have been caught up with basketball. Whether its the NBA or College ball, I hear whistles blowing and screeching shoes coming from the tv all day and night. And, now that March Madness is in full swing, Barret is constantly keeping tabs of his bracket from his iPhone while flipping through the endless channels (what a multi-tasker) that are televising these intense games.  Yes, basketball is exciting and wonderful, but we certainly don't discriminate against all the other sports. Now, since we live in the south, you must understand that football is what rules the roost around these parts. So, naturally we had to create some fun SEC team designs for our popular Rustic Barnwood Blocks. We are constantly adding more team designs. If there is a team you would like to see, let us know!
